The finer the weave, the more time it takes, and the more skilled an artisan has to be. Kelarai is a fine weaving technique which has become increasingly rare. In all of Malaysia we have only found one artisan who is able to do this - she is a 73 year old lady in Terengganu.
Mengkuang leaves are harvested, dried, dyed, woven into fine mats first and then woven into these clutches. The clutches are finished with the hand-stitched tulang belut (eel spine) technique.
A detachable brass chain is included, so you can wear this beautiful clutch on or off shoulder.
